Alturian Fan Controller Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 6, 2026
Last updated: September 6, 2026
Alturian Labs ("Alturian Labs," "we," "us," or "our") provides the Alturian Fan Controller mobile application (the "App"). This Privacy Policy explains how the App accesses, processes, stores, and shares information when you use it to set up and control an Alturian Fan Controller.
Summary
The App is designed primarily for local operation. It does not require an Alturian Labs account, does not contain advertising, and does not send controller settings, Wi-Fi credentials, fan telemetry, or scanned QR-code contents to an Alturian Labs server. Core setup and control occur directly between your mobile device and your controller over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and your local Wi-Fi network.
The Android version uses Google ML Kit to scan QR codes. QR images and decoded QR contents are processed on the device, but Google states that ML Kit may send limited app, device, performance, and usage diagnostic information to Google. See Third-party processing below.
Information the App accesses and how it is used
Controller setup information
When you set up a controller, the App processes:
- the controller's device identifier and BLE provisioning name;
- the proof-of-possession credential contained in the controller's QR code;
- nearby Wi-Fi network names (SSIDs), signal strengths, and security status reported by the controller; and
- the Wi-Fi network name and password you select or enter.
This information is used only to identify the correct controller and configure it to join the Wi-Fi network you choose. The Wi-Fi password is transferred directly from the App to the controller through an authenticated BLE provisioning session. The App does not intentionally save the Wi-Fi password after provisioning and Alturian Labs does not receive it.
Local controller and fan data
While you use the App, it communicates with the controller on your local network. Information processed may include:
- the controller identifier, hostname, local IP address, model, and local service information;
- fan names, requested fan speeds, calibration values, boost status, and RPM telemetry; and
- commands you send to adjust, rename, or calibrate fans.
The App uses this information to discover the controller, display its current state, and carry out your commands. This traffic is not routed through an Alturian Labs cloud service. Fan settings and calibration information may be stored locally on the controller so they can be restored after a restart or power loss.
Device permissions
- Camera: Used only while you scan an Alturian Fan Controller setup QR code. The App does not save photographs or video from the scanner.
- Nearby devices and Bluetooth: Used to discover and communicate with the controller during BLE provisioning.
- Location on Android 11 and earlier: Older Android versions require location permission for BLE device discovery. The App does not use GPS or other location APIs to determine, store, or transmit your physical location.
- Network and multicast access: Used to discover and communicate with the controller on the local Wi-Fi network. It also permits Google ML Kit to send the limited diagnostic information described below.
You may deny or revoke these permissions in your device settings, but controller setup or discovery may then be unavailable.
Third-party processing
Google ML Kit
On Android, the App uses Google ML Kit through the mobile_scanner component to recognize the controller's QR code. Google states that QR image input and decoded output are processed on the device and are not sent to Google servers.
Google also states that ML Kit may collect limited technical information for diagnostics and usage analytics, including device manufacturer and model, operating-system version and build, available ML hardware, App package name and version, per-installation identifiers, performance metrics, API configuration, input and output sizes, feature events, and error codes. Google states that this diagnostic information is encrypted in transit using HTTPS and is not transferred by ML Kit to third parties. The App does not enable ML Kit's optional barcode auto-zoom feature.
For more information, see Google's ML Kit Terms and Privacy, ML Kit Android data-disclosure information, and Google Privacy Policy.
Local provisioning software
The App uses Espressif provisioning software to establish the BLE provisioning session and send the Wi-Fi configuration directly to the controller. Alturian Labs does not use that software to send the configuration to an Alturian Labs server.
How information is shared
Alturian Labs does not sell personal information and does not use App information for advertising. Alturian Labs does not receive or share your Wi-Fi credentials, QR-code contents, controller settings, or fan telemetry through a cloud backend.
Limited technical diagnostic information may be processed by Google through ML Kit as described above. Information may also be disclosed if required by applicable law, but Alturian Labs cannot disclose local App or controller information that it does not possess.
Data retention and deletion
- QR-code contents and the Wi-Fi password are used transiently during setup and are not intentionally retained by the App after provisioning.
- Wi-Fi credentials remain stored on the controller until you replace them or perform the controller's Wi-Fi reset procedure. On the current controller, power it normally, hold the BOOT button for five seconds, and then release it to clear saved Wi-Fi credentials and restart provisioning mode.
- Fan names, fan-speed settings, and calibration values may remain on the controller until you change them or erase or reinitialize the controller.
- Uninstalling the App removes App data controlled by the Android operating system, but it does not erase information stored on the controller.
- Google controls retention of ML Kit diagnostic information under Google's applicable policies.
The App does not provide user accounts, so there is no Alturian Labs App account to delete. If you need help removing locally stored controller information, contact us at the address below.
Security
The App uses a controller-specific proof-of-possession credential to establish an authenticated BLE provisioning session. Core fan control occurs on the local network rather than through an Alturian Labs cloud service. You should use a trusted, password-protected local network, protect the controller's setup QR code, and keep your mobile device and App up to date.
No transmission or storage method is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children's privacy
The App is not directed to children under 13, and Alturian Labs does not knowingly collect personal information from children through the App. If you believe a child has provided information to us, contact us so we can review the matter.
Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when the App's features, data practices, or legal obligations change. We will post the revised policy at the same public location and update the date at the top. Material new data uses may also require an in-App notice or consent.
